Strategic Planning

At Cornell University, the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art is preparing for AAM reaccreditation and significant capital projects, with an emphasis on strengthening its service to students. With a clear mission already in place, the museum leadership sought a strategic planning process that would clarify priorities, establish consensus among stakeholders, and set a results-oriented path for the future.

Chora has guided the Johnson Museum through a structured planning process that encompassed a clear-eyed assessment of the current situation and the identification of core strategic priorities for the period ahead. The approach, rooted in Chora’s experience with university museums, has given the Johnson Museum the plan it needed — a plan that balances academic rigor, operational clarity, and an inspiring educational vision.

“Working with Chora was transformative! Their rigorous strategic planning process helped us align our high-level vision with measurable strategic objectives and key results. They brilliantly combined analytical precision with a genuinely inclusive process—turning a complex project into an exciting season of reflection and growth that will strengthen the visitor experience and our internal practice for years to come. The plan is both clear and practical, and their collaborative, results-focused process has built our team’s capacity to sustain the work.”
